| Gifted children often distinguish themselves in traditional classrooms, although they may not necessarily thrive. Sometimes they feel that they don’t fit in with their peers, or that it’s somehow not necessarily the most popular trait to be smart. At other times they may become bored with the pace of the class. The traditional approach of skipping a child one or two grades ahead presents a different dilemma. While the student may be academically capable, he or she may have difficulty fitting in socially with older children due to their age difference. Moreover, a student who is ready to advance in one subject may not be ready to accelerate in all areas. The Rhoades School is designed to support a student through challenges. Our smaller class sizes enable teachers to customize the curriculum to each individual student’s needs. A student who excels in one subject can move ahead, while remaining on pace in other subjects. In this way, students can move ahead academically while remaining with their peers socially. If you have seen your child exhibit one or more of the following indicators, you may seek a school focused on gifted children: - Speaking and reading early
- Possessing extensive vocabulary
- Exhibiting longer attention span than peers
- Enjoying reading material beyond their age level
- Preferring to work and solve problems independently
- Recalling easily what they have learned
- Needing to feel understood by parents and other adults
If your child demonstrates these traits, The Rhoades School may be a good fit. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with our Director of Admissions for an in-depth evaluation. |
