Middle School students at Rhoades spent two days at the San Diego Regional Junior United Nations Conference held at USD.

Written by sixth grade student, Alexandra Orczyk:

Our Debating World Issues elective went to the San Diego Junior Model United Nations last week. It was very interesting learning about the problems in the world and how the UN works to solve these problems. We all had a country, for instance Austria or Bolivia, which we learned about and represented that country at the Model UN.

At the Model UN were many different committees, from the United Nations Development Programme, which debated issues such as providing education to refugees and improving infrastructure in Latin America, to the International Maritime Organization, which debated issues such as new Arctic trade routes and South and East China Seas disputes. In these committees we discussed different resolutions to solve these problems, and then voted on passing these resolutions.

At the end of the first day a crisis was introduced. In our committees, we collaborated to write and pass resolutions that can help solve the crisis before a World War 3 started.

We can’t wait for next year’s Model UN!
