Middle School student DJ Nelson attends the FIRST Robotics World Championship.

The FIRST Robotics World Championship took place on April 19-22, 2017 in Houston, TX.  DJ’s team, Shockwave from The Grauer School, competed in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Division (consisting of 7th - 12th graders).  They were one of 128 teams invited to compete from around the world, out of over 5000 teams in the FTC Division.  They competed alongside teams from the U.S., Canada, Mexico, China, Australia, Israel, South Africa, Turkey and others.  The team put their robot to the test against world-championship caliber opponents and came away with a 4-4-1 record for their 9 matches.  The team was inspired by the designs of the other robots and was happy to have the opportunity to compete against such quality opponents.  A highlight for DJ was getting the opportunity to meet Dean Kamen, founder of the FIRST Robotics program and well-known inventor, best known for inventing the Segway personal transportation vehicle.  Also participating in the final festivities was, from the Black Eyed Peas, long-time supporter of FIRST and strong promoter of STEM education for kids.
