Service Learning Home / Academics / Service Learning An Attitude of Gratitude At The Rhoades School, we foster an attitude of gratitude in our school community by engaging in service learning. Service learning experiences occur when the service is tied to curriculum and instruction. Our students engage in ongoing reflection before, during and after the service learning project. They are challenged to consider various points of view and value diverse backgrounds. Service learning also gives our students the chance to choose projects that matter to them and help our local and global communities. Schoolwide service learning projects such as beach cleanup and Feeding America provide students, parents and faculty opportunities to work together as a community. See more examples of recent service learning projects. Elementary School At our Elementary School, students work with teachers on a variety of projects, such as the Empty Bowls Project which helps fight hunger around the world. They have also learned about composting with worms from the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation and started a composting garden to help the environment. Middle School Through our advisory program, our middle school students complete service projects. They help communities by working with Camp Pendleton and Casa de Amistad, which supports low-income English language learners. These projects teach our students the importance of helping others and making a difference. Our school also finds ways for everyone to give back together. School-wide projects, like Feeding America, bring students, parents, and teachers together to fight hunger and help those in need. Students can also join the Girl Rising Club, a global movement for education equality.
