On Friday, November 10th, The Rhoades School honored Veteran’s Day with Flag Salute lead by Brownie Troop 3185 and student presentations. The event ended by recognizing veterans in our community. See below for highlights of the student presentations.
The History of Veteran’s Day

Veterans Day is a national holiday that originated on November 11, 1919, which was the first anniversary of the end of World War 1. In 1926, a resolution was passed for an annual observance of this special day. Then, in 1938 it became a national holiday, paying tribute to all veterans, past and present, who served in times of war and peace. And while today is the 10th, it is considered Veterans (Day) observance day for schools to discuss this important national holiday. We use this day and tomorrow to thank the veterans and current military personnel for protecting our freedom and keeping our country safe.
What is freedom?

Thinking of the sacrifices our Veterans have made helps us realize how important our freedom is. Freedom is very important to U.S. citizens. The military works very hard to keep us free. The military veterans have helped us in many situations. Veteran’s Day acknowledges those veterans who keep us free and protected. If you have freedom, you have the right to speak out for a cause and stand up for yourself. Freedom means that you can’t be enslaved. Freedom is the right to not live as a refugee. Freedom means that you can vote for your leaders. Freedom is the right to be treated equally. Freedom gives us the right to have equal pay regardless of gender. Freedom is essential. If you are free, you can change the world.

There are 7 branches of the military: The Air Force and its Reserve, Air National Guard, Army and its Reserve, Army National Guard, Coast Guard and its Reserve, Marine Corps and its Reserve, and the Navy and its Reserve. Here are some fun facts: People in the military that are bald have to shave their heads every 2 to 3 days. The Army is older than the country it serves. If the US Army were a city, it would be the 10th largest in the United States. Also, did you know that San Diego has the most military personnel in the whole United States? There are 95,000 uniformed personnel in San Diego area. Navy and marines make up most of military presence. Camp Pendleton alone has 37,000 active marines.
