Nineteen Rhoades Students Participate in State Science Fair

Nineteen Rhoades School 7th and 8th graders competed at the California Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles on April 24, 2018. The Rhoades School had more state science fair qualified students than any other school in San Diego County.

This year’s participants were:

8th graders
Kayla Brewer, Jasmine Elasaad, Marissa Goswami, Colin Kovarik, Umair Mahmood, Collin Schneider, Garrett Warner and Maggie Watts

7th graders
Isabel Bruce, Kian Chakamian, Pascale Fung, Morgan Link, Lakshmi Menon, Joy Ruppert, Alexander Severinghaus, Priyanka Soe, Elizabeth Thacker, Caroline Worman and Eric Yang

Five students were honored with place awards in their categories. These students each received a medal and a cash award.

Second Place Awards
Joy Ruppert – Cottonwood Creek Contamination: Investigating Water Quality of Moonlight Beach Effluent
Elizabeth Thacker – Effectiveness of Hand Drying Products Utilizing Silver Ion Antimicrobial Fabric Technology in Reducing Bacteria

Third Place Awards
Lakshmi Menon – Effects of Ultraviolet Light on Bacteria Mortality: Bacillus subtilis vs. Micrococcus luteus
Caroline Worman – Analyzing Escondido Creek Water Quality

Fourth Place Award
Garrett Warner – Effects of Base Isolators on Building Stability

Additionally, four students earned honorable mention awards: Kian Chakamian, Jasmine Elasaad, Marissa Goswami, and Collin Schneider.

Congratulations to all of our State Science Fair participants! Their outstanding and sophisticated projects represented an impressive volume of work and a tremendous depth of scientific ideas.
