Middle School Science Award Ceremony 2022-2023

 This year nine Rhoades School students chose to dedicate a great deal of their time, energy and creativity to develop outstanding science fair projects and enter the county science fair competition. Incredibly, at this year’s Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair with hundreds of students competing, our Rhoades School students earned three of the eight top awards that were given at the county contest! Our Rhoades School students also earned more awards at the California Science and Engineering Fair state science fair contest than any other middle school in San Diego County, and our Rhoades School students were awarded more national science fair nominations than students at any other middle school in San Diego County. In addition to these accolades our students earned Professional Society Awards and Special Awards. 

John Powers earned Third Place in the physics Category of Energy, Materials and Transport at the county science fair and a professional award with national acknowledgement from the Marine Technology Society. Congratulations, John! 

For her science fair project Olivia Go earned a First Place Award in the competitive category of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Congratulations, Olivia! 

CC Capaldi earned a First Place Award in the challenging category of Microbiology at the county science fair and went on to compete in the state contest, the California Science and Engineering Fair. For her project, CC was selected as a Thermo-Fisher National Science Fair Nominee. Congratulations, CC! 

At the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair, Medha Ravi earned a First Place Award along with a professional award from the highly regarded San Diego Psychological Association. She went on to compete at the California Science and Engineering Fair in the category of Product Science, Physical, where Medha’s project earned her a distinguished Honorable Mention Award at the state contest. Congratulations, Medha! 

For their team project Adam Jaimovich and Zak Sayed earned First Place Awards at the county science fair and a professional award from the esteemed American Chemical Society. These two Thermo-Fisher National Science Fair Nominees went on to compete at the California Science and Engineering Fair and were honored with the First Place Medal for the state of California in the category of Toxicology for their project titled, “Efficacy of Various Spice Extracts in Combating Potential Stimulant Hazards”. Congratulations, Adam and Zak! 

Keanu Zeller was selected as a Thermo-Fisher National Nominee and competed at the state science fair contest in the category of Electronics and Electromagnetics. Keanu earned a First Place Award at the county Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair and two professional awards, including a coveted Special Award from the Professional Engineers in California Government. In addition, Keanu was awarded one of the top prizes of the entire county fair, the First Runner-up Physical Science Grand Award. Keanu’s project was titled, “Effects of Tilt Angle on Eddy Current Impacts” Congratulations, Keanu! 

Sami Sternson is a Thermo Fisher National Science Fair Nominee. He earned a First Place Award at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair and two professional awards, including the DOD STEM Leadership Prize. At the California Science and Engineering Fair state competition Sami was the recipient of the Second Place Medal for the state of California in the category of Plant Biology. At the county science fair, Sami was honored with one of the top prizes of the fair, the First Runner-up Grand Award for Life Science. His project was titled, “Production of Natural UVA-Absorbing Sunscreens in Plant Leaves”. Congratulations, Sami! 

Lily Long is a Thermo Fisher National Science Fair Nominee. Lily earned a First Place Award at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair and two professional awards, including an award from the Association for Women in Science and another First Place Award from the San Diego Psychological Association. At the California Science and Engineering Fair state competition Lily was honored with the First Place Medal for the state of California in the category of Behavioral Sciences. At the county science fair Lily also made her mark. Lily earned a top prize at the fair, the Grand Award for Life Science. Lily’s project was titled, “Exploring Academic Applications of a Turing Test Derivative”. Congratulations, Lily! 

Many congratulations to these terrific students for their wonderful efforts and their truly remarkable achievements!
